Developer creates a way to control the iPhone X with the eyes

Since last year when Apple introduced the iPhone X’s TrueDepth camera , everyone agrees that the technology is quite promising and should bring us good evolutions in the next few years. We have already seen an example here of an application capable of interacting only with the movement of our eyebrows .


With ARKit 2.0 (coming along with iOS 12), it will be possible to more accurately identify the direction of the user’s look, which has allowed a developer to create a proof of concept of what can be done with it.





Matt Moss is a student who participated in WWDC last week, and has already created a small application with ARKit 2.0 showing what a system controlled by the user’s eyes would look like. We know that iOS can not connect a computer mouse because everything is done by touch. But with the new technology, it would be possible to manipulate the system just by looking. Check out:



The cursor is moved by the movement of the look, and the “click” is simulated by blinking the eyes. So he can manipulate the system, as if he were on the computer.


Almost a year ago, we commented here on the Blog about a company that Apple acquired, SensoMotoric Instruments (SMI), specialized in precisely detecting eye movement of the user. Now, functionality will be available for developers to include in their applications.


This feature, if popularizing, can be of great value for accessibility and people with movement difficulties. I can not help but think of  Stephen Hawking who has made use of technology to overcome all his strong physical limitations and continue to spread his genius for the benefit of all of us. That is why this kind of novelty, implemented in a simple cell phone , is something that we should rather admire and find incredible.
